Don't make this same mistake that I made... [Become A Better Blogger]

Published: Tue, 08/04/15

It wasn't all that long ago that Instagram was the new social kid on the block.

And I admit, I wasn't excited to work on building an Instagram following. I didn't like that you can't link back to blog posts.

But the fact is Instagram's importance kept on growing and now I really wish I had worked harder on it in the early days.

While I did sign up early on and start using it to share personal photos, my mistake was not working harder to build my following. I felt like I was posting casual photos of my kids and I didn't really want a huge number of people following.

That was a huge mistake.

I just came back from a short trip to Whistler Blackcomb mountain where the PR rep who invited me said their most important platform is Instagram.

She also said they're getting started with SnapChat. Sigh.

It's tough in this business... there's always more work to do and new social channels where we need to build followings.

I continue to hear from brands and businesses that they are focusing more and more on Instagram.

And I'm surprised to say that I am enjoying using Instagram more these days.

On that trip to Whistler Blackcomb, I used Periscope and Instagram to share in real time. Whereas, it took me a couple of days to make the time to publish the blog post

I'm not going to make the same mistake with Periscope.

The thing with Instagram and Periscope is that it is hard to get traffic back to your blog from those social channels. But if you can share value in the Instagram photo or Periscope video, your posts there become valuable to the brand you're promoting without you needing to get the traffic to your blog.

If you are using Periscope, make sure you create a Katch.me account and check the setting to "Auto-Katch" all your streams.

Periscope videos can only be replayed for 24 hours, but Katch allows you to keep the videos and embed them in blog posts.

So I will be continuing to grow our Instagram and Periscope audiences. Our blog will always be the hub for our content, but these other social channels continue to grow in importance.

If I'm not yet following you on Instagram or Periscope, reply to this email and let me know.

You can find me at https://instagram.com/5minutesformom/ and on Periscope as @5minutesformom. And our archived scopes are on Katch at http://katch.me/5minutesformom

Also, if you haven't yet, link up on our Periscope linky list here.

(I've been so busy, I haven't had time to write a blog post about that list yet... so hurry and get it on it now.)

"See" you soon!
